July 23, 2023

It was a day to play with Lightroom. One of my long term projects is to make sure all the photos have good keywords and that all are properly dated. You can see in the photo there are two smart collections to facilitate this: without date and without keywords. The keywords aren't too hard. Often it arises because I forgot to apply the keywords to all the photos in a shoot. That is easy to fix. The one that I have problems with is locations. Ginny is a great help in that regard.

As for dates, that is a different story. When I am scanning photos and slides and don't know the date I assign January 1, 1900, as the date which indicates an unknow date and makes the photos easy to find. Many old slides and photos have date clues. Sometimes a development date is stamped on the slide frame. Sometimes the development date is stamped on a photo. Sometimes the photos are in a developing envelope with a date. Sometimes there is writing on the back. And then sometimes there is no clue. Those are the ones dated 1/1/1900.

Sometimes you get lucky. When I scanned this photo of Ginny's brother Joe (over 10 years ago) I didn't notice the cake in the background. You can just make out one candle and the words Happy Birthday. Bingo. Joe was born on October 19, 1955 so this photo is about a year later. Chalk one up for the photo sleuth. This is fun.
