Kingsford Smith (Sydney) Airport, Mascot, NSW

This is Qantas 747-400 VH-OJT, which went by the nickname "Fraser Island". Like VH-OEH which we saw earlier in this gallery, it is still a damn fine looking aircraft. Or was, when this shot was taken 5 years before I wrote this, and who knows how many years before you're seeing this. This front on, off centre shot shows just what a good looking aircraft the 747 is.

I had written some commentary about this shot earlier. It must've been a few years earlier because I wrote, and I quote me: " Qantas is in the process of phasing out its 747 fleet." That ship has already sailed, and reached the destination dock. There are no 747s flying for Qantas any longer, and haven't been since VH OEJ flew out from Sydney Airport to the aircraft boneyards of the western USA on 22 July 2020.

VH-OJT left service earlier than that, though. It was retired even before the pandemic hit. Specifically, VH-OJT was retired on 22 September 2018 after flying one last hop as QF55, BNE (Brisbane) to LAX (Los Angeles). From there it was headed to the Mojave Desert.

According to Australian Aviation "Figures from Qantas showed VH-OJT, MSN25565 and LN1233, completed about 9,300 cycles and racked up about 90,000 flight hours in its near two-decade flying career with the airline.

That represents about 18 million kilometres, or 111 return trips between earth and the moon, from the time it was delivered to the airline in October 1999."

At this point she had a year and a bit of life left.
