Ebony Cup or Hairy Black Cup
An Ascomycete or cup fungus in the Sarcosomataceae family. The caps are cup shaped and typically crowded together, reaching 0.8 inch across and covered on the exerior with protruding hairs throughout the length of the fruiting bodies (technically apothecia). The cup margins are often wavy and curved inward. Both exterior and spore-bearing inner surface are black to brownish black. It is found on soil or in moss under pine and other conifers, often in spring. It may or may not have a rudimentary stem.
