Bayon (XII-XIII C.)

Between 1911 and 1914 Jean Commaille (1868-1916), Angkor’s first curator, partially cleared the Bayon again overgrown. It is an incessant work: the first rain of monsoon makes appear the small vegetation cut shortly before.
Living conditions are still very difficult in Angkor. The curator and his wife live in a hut.
His mission ends dramatically: He is murdered by bandits while carrying the workers' pay.

The elephants do look happy (janescottcumming's comment). Maybe it's a case of boy meets girl ;-). The soldiers are NOT happy. So much going on here. Great shot!

an excellent composition to select this scene so representative of the wars between the Khmers and the Chams..it sounds as if times were still violent during Commaille's time..V
