We met our tour guide for Cologne at this statue.
This is the Edith Stein statue.
She was a German philosopher, fighter for women's rights and a Catholic nun with the name Teresia Benedicta a Cruce.
She was of Jewish descent and was murdered in Auschwitz-Birkenau on 9 August 1942.
The statue shows her at the three stages of her life.
A young Jewish woman, and undecided woman and lastly a Catholic nun.
There are footprints leading to the pile of shoes the Nazis took from their prisoners.
Our guide was very solemn as he was telling us about Edith.
He told us that he has visited Auschwitz and he will make sure his children will visit there when they are old enough.
He felt very strongly that the history of the Holocaust be kept alive so as to never be repeated again.
He was the best guide we had on our trip with his understanding of German history.
With clever stories and interesting facts he made the city come alive.
We were not the only ones who tipped handsomely at the end of the tour.
