Nothing But Cathedral

Begun in 1248, the construction of this Gothic masterpiece took place in several stages and was not completed until 1880.
At about 26,000 square feet, the Cologne Cathedral is large enough to hold over 20,000 people.
In addition to being the home to the Three Wise Men, the Cologne Cathedral features breathtaking stained-glass windows.
Cologne Cathedral was left almost unscathed during the Allied bombing raids that flattened much of the rest of the city during second world war.
Cathedral guides argue that this is proof of intervention by the Almighty.
However it is more likely that the pilots used the spires as a landmark while bombing the city.

what religious fervor must be behind the sheer intensity of all those decorations...the tight framing really accentuates the strong vertical thrust here...that's a good look at Gothic style...V

Very nice detail in this wide angle shot. I like the way you lined this up. "V"
Actually the Cathedral was hit fourteen times because it is next to the main railroad station and the Hohenzollern Bridge. The station was destroyed, but the bridge survived intact, as you pointed out in a previous image.
Another interesting fact is that the cathedral was not finished until 1880 after a break of 400 years, because they ran out of funds and lost the plans for the facade in your photo. The rediscovery of the plans were one of the factors that led to the completion.

Pretty impressive shot Jane...

Also have to say, the perspective does remind me of the scene in Star Wars when they are flying close over the death star. But then, I'm an odd duck
