NGC 281 - The Pacman Nebula

NGC 281 is a region of gas and dust situated about 9200 light years from Earth and seen from here in the northern constellation Cassiopeia. It is a star-forming region where hydrogen gas is excited by the stars forming the cluster cataloged as IC 1590, causing the hydrogen to emit light in the near infrared and visible red parts of the spectrum. The common name of the nebula comes from its resemblance to the video game character.
