I'm not really sure, but this appears to be some type of thistle artichoke, with violet flowers and green leaves. It is extremely tall, most plants in the grouping were over 6 feet high. If I'm correct, its botanical name is Cynara cardunculus. It's a thistle in the family Asteraceae and is a naturally occurring species that also has many cultivated forms, including the globe artichoke.
If anyone has any specific information to backup this 'amateur identification' I'd appreciate it.
