Small bird-dropping moth (Ponometia erastrioides), #9095

Larose Forest

For the August Challenge -"It Caught My Eye".

I was skirting a large ditch by the trail when I noticed this small moth on Joe-pye weed, which made an attractive backdrop for it. The larvae of this species feed on Ragweeds. "Bird-dropping" refers to the presumed resemblance to a bird dropping which should deter a predator.

Cool capture. Amazing how insects mimic other things in nature. The backdrop is perfect, too.
