World Photography Day 2005

The Wall that Heals

The Traveling Vietnam Wall.

On this day, there was a train of severe thunderstorms for most of the day. However, I still made a point of going to see the wall. The above photo was taken in drizzling rain after a bad lighting and thunder storm had finally cleared the area. Soon afterwards, the next thunderstorm arrived. It was eerie (not to mention dangerous) being out in an open field such as this during these storms. However, the few people, who did venture out to see the wall, huddled under a small, open-air tent during the worst of the storms. No one felt safe, but Vietnam veterans said that war (and not knowing when your time might be up) was far worse. The tent, where we sheltered, had been provided by those bringing the wall to our city. During our hours huddled together, I learned a lot about the Vietnam "conflict" by talking to those who had experienced it firsthand. Others had lost loved ones and were there to find names on the wall. The few people who came out to see the wall, despite the bad weather, stayed for a surprisingly long time. They had a bond.
