After being nearly wiped out in the early 1900s, Roosevelt elk on Vancouver Island have recovered to the point where some of the animals have been introduced to areas of the Sunshine Coast.
Except for a small herd in the Phillips Arm area, which probably migrated from Vancouver Island, and the recently introduced Sunshine Coast herds, the only Roosevelt Elk in British Columbia are approximately 3000 members of the subspecies that live on Vancouver Island.
These Roosevelt Elk remain a species of special concern because they have biological or life-history characteristics that make them particularly vulnerable to natural or human-caused disturbance. Species that are are recovering from being threatened or endangered are blue-listed as a species of special concern. ~ Vancouver Sun
