09 Quarantining With The Drums

(In Quarantine until Monday)

My wife has Covid-19 since last Wednesday and work suggested I quarantine with her... away from her. So, I've been taking advantage of playing my drums this week. Been having some fun this evening and figured I'd get a quick snap so I could do a B & W entry for the challenge.

For those interested, It's a Tama SwingStar (probably an early 2000s model). 10", 12", 13" Toms, 2x 16" floor toms, 22" single bass with DW9000 double pedals. 14" ArtStar Snare is pictured here. I have another 14" Artstar with wooden rims, a 14" Slingerland (1970s model wood snare) and a 14" Tama SwingStar metal snare that came with the kit. All Tama Heavy Duty hardware. Zildjian cymbals with the exception of the Sabian Paragon 22" ride and the 18" Chinese (Wuhan) cymbal. I'll see if I can get a better picture of the entire kit. Kind of hard to get a nice shot of it because there's a queen sized bed in that room along with 2 dressers. It's pretty cramped in there for sure...

BTW, I'm feeling fine. No Covid for this guy. Just a slight cold. I've been sleeping in the guest BR (which is where my drums live currently) since my wife started feeling sick last week so, I'm all good! Wife is feeling much better today. She can smell and taste food again which is a good sign. She still has a cough but she's feeling much better today.

Canon EOS 40D ,Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM
Converted to Grayscale in GIMP then back to RGB and then added a light blue color layer to the overall image to set the tone. 1/250s f/4 at 24.0mm iso100 full exif

other sizes: small medium large original auto

I've written this three times and never seem to have gotten it posted....for nostalgic reasons I suppose, but I really prefer the sepia version. (again, lol, let your poor wife sleep!) Best Wishes, Traveller

I used to put drums to a guitar recording for a friend of mine who just wanted a little drumming behind his fantastic guitar playing. We never published anything because it wasn't recorded to professional standards by any means. When I record I just go through the sound files and I just adjust in POST. What I should do is get a great sound from the get go with levels and all that before recording.

I actually just achieved the ability to record with my chosen operating system (Linux). I'd been using Windows for only recording myself for the last 4 years since switching my main machine to Linux. I couldn't figure out how to record 8 audio tracks (mics) with Linux. Their audio system used to be pretty terrible but now it's actually quite good. Not to professional standards yet either but pretty darn close. I can now make my recordings with Linux as of tonight and I am pretty stoked about that.

I enjoyed the first one but this one I love, great job! I still see the 57 peeking. I can’t imagine needing additional amplification at home, do you record for collaborations? Paul

Jim - Yeah, the gels on the toms and snare are blue anyway and I wanted to see what the blue tone would do to them. I liked the results better than the brown from last night.

Perhaps a better composition and lighting.
And I like the tone change - seems more alive.

Hey Jim, It was actually not too bad. I think I got a little better of an angle this time while still getting the 3 toms and the snare. I used my 40D this time as well with the 24-105 lens and a fill flash. The lighting is better I think on this one and I kind of like the angle a bit better as well.

Glad to hear that you are fine and that your wife is on the mend.

I like the composition and toning in this shot.
It will probably be hard to get a new shot of everything in an enclosed room.

Dave, Heh... She wasn't ready for bed at that time. In fact she asked my why I stopped and I told her our daughter needed to work in the morning so she needed to go to bed. So I stopped for her peace and quiet.

Paul, Yeah, she did have some oxygen level issues during the week but she's back up to the low 90s and getting better every day. And yes, that's an SM57. I need to readjust that mic since I re-angled the toms a bit and raised the snare a hair. Now that mic sits too low and is pointed upwards. I may re-take this photo after I make a few adjustments to the kit today.

It sounds like she might have had one of the milder cases of Covid 19 and that’s a good thing. Hey is that a Sure SM57 I see peeking out of the Toms? Paul

Glad you're feeling well and hope your wife's recovery is swift without any lasting effects.
Very thoughtful for you to play your drums. I imagine it helps her sleep more soundly.
