Practically invisible from the sea, this fort, built in 1848 on an islet, protected the entrance of the port of Brest by relying on several batteries of guns.
At the end of the Second World War, the German commander of Brest, set up his headquarters there in order to fight a final battle. He surrendered on September 19, 1944 after an intense bombardment of the fort.
This explains the current state of the place and it is quite dangerous to venture there, especially in case of rain and storm. No sign indicates its location in order to discourage walkers from going there.

it is well hidden from the seaward side...your view from the heights portrays fort and key location well...ironic that what looks like a warship is passing by at the moment..

You would think that it could be repaired to make a tourist site, history lesson and a good restaurant. Emphasis on the last.
