On the day that my father drew this, a Japanese submarine surfaced off of the coast of Santa Barbara, CA and lobbed artillery fire at the town. That was reportedly the first time that happened on the US coastline during WWII, and caused quite a stir among our citizenry living on the coast. The incident led to the "Battle of Los Angeles" a couple of days later. While this was happening, my father drew this cartoon. Sitting in the Midwest, my father may not have felt the hysteria. Apparently, he had other things on his mind. I have two cartoons that he drew that day. This is one.
