11 Your mother should know

As a child, I would listen to the album 'Please Please Me' on a Dansette radio/record player combo. I thought it'd be great to use that album as a prop for this challenge. I rang my Dad and asked him if he knows where the album is. He replied: "Your mother should know, she remembers everything". Well, she couldn't find it so I used a 1964 Beatles album 'A Hard Days Night'.

Mick, thought provoking comment. In my case we did a lot of comparisons of various classical pieces because the frequency range and volume range were generally the largest. We listened to lots of other types of music, though generally not loud rock bands. Likewise, the best cd recordings were generally found on classical. Neither one of us had the very best vinyl playback equipment - quite decent, but not great. Jim

Jim, it must be subjective, different styles of music that play a role in how we both perceive the quality of sound. I prefer a more raw sound, with a big bottom end, when it comes to loud music and I get a very noticable difference between vinyl and CD. I'm sure if I listened to more classical at a lower volume I would appreciate the CD more, although I have never compared classical in both formats. Hmm, curious now, it might be worth me visiting a Library to see if they still lend records. Mick

Mick, I had this interesting discussion a number years ago with a good friend who lived in Japan. Both of us were sort of audiophiles. We had "built" rooms in our homes to house our equipment - electronics and speakers. We each would buy high end cd's of classical music. Pop music was not engineered as well. His goal was to reproduce the vinyl record but without the crackles and pops. My goal was to reproduce a music hall. In the end, we both were happy, and I recall that the same cd sounded pretty much the same no matter whose house we were in. Jim

Thanks Jim, Alastair & Dave. Dave. "We have it much easier now, though that doesn't necessarily make the music better". Quite right. IMO, the sound from vinyl is superior in every way. Digital may be crackle free but it hasn't quite got the atmosphere you get from a needle in a track. Mick

I like everything about this and can easily imagine hearing the music. The red cartridge works better. I remember having to align them just so and cleaning records assiduously. We have it much easier now, though that doesn't necessarily make the music better. Wondering where my albums and turntable are. The basement storage room isn't that large... Dave

Thanks Paul, I do feel quite proud of this one, I'm getting there. :-) And you are correct, it's a different cartridge. In my other image; the cartridge was blue, but the front had faded to a green tint. I altered the hue of that one but forgot the reflection. lol Mick

I liked the other but like this one even more so with the slightly different angle and dust free. You should be proud. So now I ask did you change the stylus cartridge or do some photoshop magic color replacement work? My guess is a new cartridge! Paul
