The ferry had to close recently because they did not have landing rights on the Virginia side of the river. They were not willing to pay what the owners of the property demanded, and the local authorities in Virginia were unwilling to step in and help to provide an easement on the landing site. The ferry had been in operation for about a couple of centuries. This was the last operating ferry across the Potomac. It was popular. It was also used by commuters to get to and from work.
