De Béinchen - name given to the bridge across the Alzette and the surrounding area

Luxembourg city

The old bridge was part of the fortifications built by Vauban in the 1680s linking the two portals Porte d'Eich and Porte des Bons Malades.
Above you can see the Pont Grande-Duchesse Charlotte, more commonly known by the name Roud Bréck - Red Bridge.
The chimney dates back to many years ago when the Pfaffenthal area, though housing mostly people living in appalling poverty, had as its only riches the supply of fresh running water.
This water was pumped up to the Ville Haute for the benefit of the well-to-do population there.
The water was not always without health hazards and the pumping contributed to impurities being added, which in turn regularly led to the spread of typhoid fever among the people of the city.
