These portals were built in 1684-85 by military architect Vauban and were used as gates to the city.
The one on the left is Porte d'Eich (named after one of the areas on the outskirts of the city) and the one on the right is Porte des Bons Malades (as there was a place for leprosy sufferers outside the city gates).
