This bridge was constructed at the start of the 20th century (construction from 1900 to 1903) to link the two parts of the city divided by a valley. The decision to build the bridge came after it was declared at the Treaty of London that Luxembourg City would cease to be a fortified city and the fortifications were reduced. The plans for the bridge were audacious for that time: at 84.65 m the central span was to be the largest stone arch in existence.
