07 Snowing

Groton, Massachusetts

This picture was taken about 3 hours into what should have been a 15 hour storm. A couple of hours later, it turned to rain so this is one of the few pictures that I have from the storm.

Jim, it allowed me to delete the duplicate.

Re double comments -- I have seen that happen quite a bit over the last month or so. I have had it happen to me once or twice. It's almost as if they get two submissions, and don't register one from a signed in member. I'll bet it is more related to the browser updates that have been happening recently than to something on their end.

What can I say? I'm a gambler. It's December. The weather will eventually come to me. I took my sports car out for a ride on Friday when the temperature was about 50F. Today's is in the mid-30s. So, progress?

I'm curious why my last comment turned into a double, with the second (registered at the same time) appearing as "Guest".

Dave - counting on appropriate future weather for anything is always a risky bet.
It was like me flying to Arizona during the summer monsoons a few ago only to get shut out over 2 weeks.

Like you, my eye first goes to the two very white branches in the center which diagonal upward & left - like a leading line. Then I see the snowflakes, which for me, really came out well. I have never captured them well.

BTW, when I used Topaz, I too did not like the sharpen mode, but about 30-40 on the focus mode seemed to ok for me.

I tried using Sharpen AI on the original version of this picture and wasn't happy with the results. Then I tried cropping it out or placing at the very edge of the picture; I found that the eye tends to concentrate on the snow-laden branch, not the following snow. I think that the blurred feeder gives an added element of depth that the picture needs. After playing around with some changes, the picture seems to work better the way it is, at least to me.

I think that it was worth trying some other things - even it they didn't work out. So thank you for the suggestion to use Sharpen AI.

Oh, the irony if I, the flaky challenge caller, was stymied by the elements.

Yes, always tradeoffs. I didn't realize the feeder was so close.
I downloaded this smaller photo and ran it through Topaz Sharpen AI in the focus mode. It really improved the feeder.

The biggest problem is depth of field. There's about 15 feet between me and the feeder and 30 feet between the feeder and the trees; I put the focus point on the trees to try and get as much of the snow as possible in focus. The closer to the trees, the more in focus the snow is. The big blurs going in the opposite direction are snowflakes close to me that are caught in an eddy the wind swirling around the house. (The downsizing seems to have added a bit of blur too.)

There was not enough light to stop down the lens without increasing the exposure time and/or ISO beyond what I wanted.

Good capture of the falling snow.
I wish it were a bit sharper.
