Those of you who are familiar with Italian architecture, even if only at a tourist level, may be doing a double take at this point and assuming that you are seeing the famous Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Milano, which was constructed between 1865 and 1877.
We aren't, though to say that this gallery stole ideas from, er, I mean, was inspired by the one in Milano would be an understatement. This is in fact the Galleria Umberto I, named after the king at the time the project started in 1887. That is, 10 years after the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II was completed.
One of the optional excursions on our package tour (which we were still on at the time) was an evening at a Napoli restaurant. (Which in fact turned out to be a restaurant CHAIN, but we'll come back to that.)
As part of that we were taken to the area not far from the docks, which also contains the Galleria. We took the opportunity to walk through it on the way to the restaurant.
