Actually, a glorified burger! Mix beef mince (ground beef) with finely chopped onion and a couple of Tbs
fresh breadcrumbs, season well and form into large oval patties about 2 – 3 cm thick. Brown on both sides
in hot olive oil, drain and set aside. Fry a sliced onion until starting to soften and turn golden brown,
then add a Tbs of plain flour, mix well and cook for a minute or two, then stir in beef stock and a splash
of red wine if you’ve got it on hand. Bring to a simmer, stirring until thickened nicely, season well,
then add the beef patties. Cover and cook gently for 15 – 20 minutes. Meanwhile, boil potatoes until cooked
and mash with plenty of butter, and serve alongside the patties, together with some veggies such as beans and
carrots, with the onion gravy spooned over.
