Today while walking on a favorite trail I noticed that a few of the larger trees had
metal tags nailed to them. I don’t believe these tags were there five days ago when
I was last on this trail. Each tag appears to give a commercial assessment of the tree.
This trail is on a woodlot, so my guess is that the tags are a harbinger of logging activity.
As a person who lives in a woodframe house and who uses toilet paper, I am not opposed
to all logging. But I do think British Columbia’s old growth forests should be preserved,
and beautiful areas that are enjoyed by locals and tourists should also be preserved.
The tag indicates that the magnificent tree to which it is attached has been
estimated to be 700 years old. It would be very sad if we lose these trees.
