Be kind, be calm, be safe
Dr. Bonnie Henry is the Provincial Health Officer for British Columbia, and she has been
leading the response to the pandemic with sound policies and effective communication. Her
leadership and mantra of “be kind, be calm and be safe” has resonated with BC residents, as
evidenced by this painted stone on Quadra Island. Credit is also due to Premier John Horgan
who has allowed Dr. Henry to be the lead voice on the province’s Covid policy (in stark contrast
to Trump’s anti-science foolishness). This has resulted in Horgan having the highest approval
rating of any premier in Canada and was undoubtedly a factor in Horgan’s announcement
today that there will be a provincial election in October.
Although British Columbia has done very well under Dr. Henry’s leadership, infections have started
to rise again. Like other parts of Canada the problem seems largely due to younger people ignoring
the laws and guidelines. (Sorry to sound like an old geezer, but those are the facts.)
September 22 Update: A commentator on the radio today pointed out that a portion of the Covid
cases in young people is due to their front line jobs rather than irresponsible behavior.
This is a New York Times article on Dr. Henry from June.
