Salamander eggs (Ambystoma sp.

Found this big cluster of eggs in a vernal (temporary) pool in the woods. Salamanders in early spring come out at night to lay their eggs, wrapping the gelatinous mass around a stick or vegetation submerged in water. Vernal pools, shallow and temporary are the places to look for these.

How fascinating. I remember back to my Girl Scout days when we went to a pond or lake and I brought home some tadpoles. Unfortunately, I didn't have the correct environment for them so they never made it to adulthood.
