Parliament Square Garden, London view map

And finally we reach the big one; Winston Churchill. Needless to say, this statue is the one most prominently marked on Google Maps. And on this occasion Google even has it in the right position unlike their marking of the statue of David Lloyd George.

I don't think is any coincidence that a 3.7 m (12 foot) high statue of Churchill stands on a large (presumably granite) monolith, remote from the mere mortals who stand nearby to get a photo with him, with his name being the single word that is carved into the granite since no others are needed. (Actually, they could probably get away with using either of his names in that respect.) The intent was presumably to recognise him as a colossal character, notwithstanding the presence of a walking stick. (This stance was taken from life; it represents an image of him inspecting the bombed out House of Commons in 1941.)

Incidentally, Churchill in real life was only 1.67 m tall; just under 5'6".

My own opinion of Churchill is... complicated. I'm more than happy to condemn him for stupidity like the Gallipoli campaign; I can only assume that he didn't know how to read a contour map. Or for the misadventure in Norway. I'm not prepared to condemn him for decisions that he made which had bad consequences, but where the outcome would have been worse had he made the opposite decision or no decision at all. That goes with being a leader. I also recognise that he was the right man at the right time; had an appeaser been in charge of the government, we could have been living in a very different world; one which is rather less pleasant than the current one.

That notwithstanding, it's interesting to see people still wanting their picture taken with him, even though they can't stand shoulder to shoulder with him. Of course, at 3.7 metres, not many people can.
