Originally launched in Germany in 1913 and was named the Vaterland, after a few trips in July of 1914 she was laid up in the US at the commencement of WW1 as it was too risky to return to Germany.
She was impounded when the US entered WW1 and was turned over to the US Navy for use as a troop ship and renamed the USS Leviathan. in 1919 she was turned over to United States Lines and renamed SS Leviathan.
She remained in service till 1933 and was scrapped in 1938
