Comme pour la plupart des phares en mer, la relève de la Vieille s'effectuait à l'aide du cartahu, un filin que les gardiens lançaient à l'équipage de la vedette. Une fois le cartahu saisi et un va-et-vient établi entre le phare et le bateau, on y accrochait le « ballon » : c'était un siège rudimentaire sur lequel s’effectuait « l’échange » des gardiens. Durant toute la manœuvre, la vedette frôlait les rochers à base du phare. Aussi, l'exercice de la relève, qui requérait à la fois agilité de la part des passagers et virtuosité de la part du pilote et de l'équipage, devenait périlleux, si ce n'est tout simplement impossible, dès que la mer se faisait trop agitée.

Like most lighthouses at sea, the changing of the guards of « la Vieille » was relieved by the use of the cartahu, a line that the guards threw to the ship’s crew. Once the cartahu was seized and a back-and-forth was established between the lighthouse and the boat, the “balloon” was attached; it was a rudimentary seat on which the “exchange” of the guards took place. Throughout the manoeuvre, the boat was close to the rocks at the base of the lighthouse. Also, this exercise , which required both agility on the part of passengers and virtuosity on the part of the pilot and the crew, became dangerous, if not simply impossible, as soon as the sea became too rough.
