These beautiful beetles display a multitude of colours depending on the light hitting them. Unfortunately, they are sometimes mistaken for Japanese Beetles, an introduced species which can be destructive (and which really look nothing like these gorgeous beetles). These ones are native, and are found in natural areas feeding mostly on the native dogbane plant or, as here, sometimes on common milkweed.
