In the last post I mentioned that we have some new cameras. I was anxious to get out and do some testing, but yesterday was so hot and humid that I decided to stay home and have a mint julep. Good thinking.

It was hot again today, but not as hot or humid as yesterday. I just had to get out and take some pictures with our new cameras. I did some shooting at Bay Area Park, but the place was pretty much devoid of interesting critters. So I headed over to the university and found something to mess with, namely a nice fountain illuminated by the setting sun. I snapped a few with the MkIV and was happy. Then I tried the G5X and found that when the photos were enlarged on the camera screen they were out of focus. Holy Crap. That ain't good. I shot some signs and other stuff, but the result was the same. I packed up and started driving home wondering if I got a bad copy of this camera. My brain was whirring with what to do. Back at the house, I started immediately to try to figure this out. First step was a martini on the rocks. Then I downloaded all the images to my computer.

On first examination the G5X images were definitely not sharp. Then I noticed that the image size was 720X480. That ain't right. So I checked and found that the factory setting for resolution was the lowest possible. Why do they do that? A person wants to take the thing out of the box and get acceptable photos. Thank heavens I figured it out.

Today's photo is a shot of the aforementioned fountain with the MkIV. It is hand held at 1/10 second. Trying to smooth the water, Not bad, but a fella really needs a tripod to get a better shot like this.
