April 1, 2019

Today was the last step to getting my Cessna 170 back into the air. My friend Bloke did a final inspection and asked if I had measured the valve clearances. I had not. It escaped me during the overhaul. So we pulled all the valve covers, took out the top plugs and proceeded to start measuring. Two exhaust valves didn't have the minimum clearance on first test, so we turned the engine to compress them for a few minutes, and sure enough they came into tolerance. So we put the cowling on and are awaiting the first opportunity to start breaking in the engine.

Somehow that sounds like an accident waiting to happen.

On my first van, a Bedford CF, the instruction manual said you had to adjust the valve clearances with the engine running.
It was easy with a bit of practice. Chewed up feeler gauges, bought them in packs.
