The Experiment

The house on 106 Angel Street was a classic of New England colonial style.
It had been in the possession of a member of the Maybeck family since the mid-1800s.
Like other houses on the steep section of Angel Street, the main floor of the Maybeck house
was set several feet above the sidewalk. A door in the center of the stairway
led directly into the windowless basement or in the imagination of H. P. Lovecraft
into a strange, mythic dimension where fiendlike demi-gods ruled over hapless humans
who chanced to wander in. No wonder H. P. Lovecraft Square was just at the corner downhill from the house.

Covered with wooden clapboard siding, the Maybeck house was set on a brick foundation
painted the same color as the body of the house. Unlike the modern practice,
New England colonials prefer their houses painted with somber dark colors, in this case a dark gray.
For contrast, the functioning wooden shutters that covered the white windows were often
painted a glossy black, as was the front door.
