Commonly called the Bugeye Sprite in the U.S. and the Frog eye in the U.K.
The came came with a 948 cc engine from the British Motor Corp. line
of cars. The Sprite was almost the lightest car you could buy in the
United States at the time. If I remember right it weighted about 1,200
pounds. Only the Lotus 7 was lighter. While not very fast it had excellent
near neutral handling and good brakes for its weight. In stock form
it would do 82 mph with the top down and 88 with the top up. These figures
I am quoting were for my Sprite.
The first car I ever bought was a 1959 Bugeye Sprite. I soon started
hopping it up. When I got through with spending money and my labor to
make it go faster it would do about 85 mph in third gear and somewhere around 100
in fourth.
I raced the car in the Oregon Region of the SCCA a few times until I got
married and "She Who Must Be Obeyed' requested that I quit racing:-(
This is a Johnny Lightning Model from about 2000. The scale is about 1/43.
I think in my Me Gallery I may have a photo of my raace car.
