Snapping Turtle (Chelydra serpentina)

Larose Forest

I really appreciate these prehistoric looking reptiles. It takes a long time for the females to reach their egg-laying years (I think it is something like 20 years), and too many are killed crossing roads. In addition, until recently legal hunting of these animals contributed to a sharp decline in their population. They are now a protected species and hunting of them is at last, banned.

That's a real beauty! Glad to hear hunting them is now banned, Snapping Turtles like all other turtles are declining everywhere. Road kill, hunting, collecting and loss of habitat outpace their hatchling survival rate.

Nice capture. So sad they need to be protected. People that exploit animals make me sick.
