Breakfastime Visitor

What would a challenge be without a backyard wildlife image?
I actually had to back up to get the entire buck in frame.

Nature is both an artist and architect. Who else would
have come up with a creature so perfectly optimized for
eating our hostas and chasing does around our house?

A couple years ago when I was at the arboretum in Overland Park I was studying a sculpture when a small doe came out of the brush no more than 10 feet from me. She looked at me and just wandered across the trail and back into the brush. No hurry no worry! And of course I had the 70-200 on the 50d so I was far too close to to even attempt to shoot anything. "Bucky" is pretty much resident. There's plenty of undeveloped land nearby for shelter, none of it available for hunting. They are ravenous, feasting on our hostas and lilies and not shy about chomping on our pricker-protected raspberries. The lawn is also popular and seems to be an attractive toileting option.

While I'm no expert in deer behavior, I sensed that a closer approach would be unwise and did my best always to have a retreat available. Sometimes their expression appears to convey that we are invading their territory. Hard to argue against that.

I was initially about 30 feet away and then backed up to 40 or 50 feet to achieve a better photographic distance. The light was much better than in the late evening or early morning when I'm used to shooting them. A shot of a doe (I'll put it in Pending) facing the sun highlighted her whiskers.

What a beautiful animal. Great capture.
He may have moved in closer to the city after hunting season started.

When we lived in Medina, I had them eating almost everything below shoulder height that had leaves on it as winter set in.

Welcome back to the group. At 135 mm on a crop you must have been rather close to this guy which would concern me since I don’t understand thier behavior. Paul
