The three amigos

These three goats were putting on quite a show in the barn, with Calico Jack (with the horns) constantly butting into the larger one whose name I don’t know, and Jonas (with the floppy ears) watching it all. Calico Jack and Jonas are among eight goats and two sheep at the sanctuary rescued by police in a high speed chase from two criminals who were taking them to slaughter.

The trio’s antics were quite amusing, but you really needed to pay attention to what was going on to avoid getting nicked by those horns or knocked over by the animals.

*****

We went to a fundraising event at the Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary, a 400-acre nonprofit refuge in Poolesville, Maryland, that offers care, rehabilitation and permanent sanctuary for neglected, abused or abandoned farm animals as well as providing a protected habitat for wildlife. I was amazed at how many people attended -- it was packed -- and everybody had fun, listening to music, eating vegetarian food and most of all, visiting with the farm animal residents of the sanctuary.

I love goats. They're so amusing, especially the babies. I go to Connemara (former home of Carl Sandburg) in Flat Rock, NC, to see the babies every spring. The volunteers who care for them are wonderful and you're encouraged to mingle with all the goats. My neighbor brought "Connie Mara" home at night because she needed special care due to a birth defect that made it difficult for her to balance. She eventually went to the Noah's Ark Sanctuary in Locust Grove, Georgia, also former home of a lion, tiger and bear who were rescued from an abusive situation and lived together. One of them, I believe has died. http://www.pbase.com/isabel95/image/96143369 Oh, yes...we never got to see Connie Mara - apparently she went home with the director of the sanctuary!
