Sumac flea beetle (Blepharida rhois), larva

Reveler Conservation Area

The sumac shrubs at the conservation area had numerous of these larvae on them, each one with a carefully placed pile of frass (insect poop) on their backs to deter predators! They turn into the most beautifully coloured red and white beetle: http://www.pbase.com/laroseforest/image/157158988
