decline

Heil, North Dakota

one of the small towns we ended up in was Heil, most modest and sparsely occupied....the state of this old church building spoke volumes about the decline of the local population

What a great find. The state of this church is the opposite of "Heil" which can be translated as ideal. As a noun it means salvation so it goes well with this church.

I suspect it is rarely used. Nobody has cut the grass. An unfortunate name for a town.
