Deer fly (Chrysops sp.)

Marlborough Forest

These flies are abundant in summer, and while it may be too much of a bounty to have so many, they are food for a variety of other wildlife species including dragonflies who will often zip in and pluck one from in front of you. This one has had a good feed! It is the females who feed on blood, the males are content with nectaring on flowers.

I've seen them like this on my dog, who for some reason doesn't seem bothered.
