In 1879 the brand-new cheese and butter factory "Freia" by Mindert Bokma de Boer is revolutionary.
Firstly, the production of cheese and butter takes place on the farm until then. The arrival of the
factory means a big change for many farmers in the area. But Freia is also a state-of-the-art,
hygienic steam dairy factory. The steam not only provides power for the machines, but also heat for
pasteurizing the milk, for cleaning and disinfecting and for heating. Freia is growing into one of
the largest dairy factories in the region. But in the late 1960s, the once progressive
Freia can no longer keep up with the times. Moreover, milk supply is stagnating due to the
