Red-eared slider (Trachemys scripta ssp. elegans)

Petrie Island

this is the turtle commonly sold in the pet trade, non native to Canada. They often turn up in all sorts of places when people release them into the wild. They can't survive our cold winters, though very rarely one is found to have done so, but they don't usually make it through a third winter, especially if that winter is particularly cold. It is sad to think that they are being given a death sentence when released into the wild.

There's been a couple of large ones at Mud Lake. Will have to see if they survive this really cold winter.

Love the light illuminating its back. Plenty of red-eared sliders in ponds around here with the milder winters.
