I went over to the Johnson Space Center today to try some timelapse photography of the Space Center Houston tram embarking visitors after viewint the Saturn V rocket. You can see the result here. I will probably go out there again some time and do some more.
As long as I was out there I had to have yet another look at the Saturn V rocket on display. For you that don't remember, the Saturn V was the launch vehicle that took Americans to the moon. It is an awesome sight. Today's photo is of the business end of the S1C first stage. Those are F1 rocket engines, there are five of them. The F1 is the largest liquid fueled engine ever built. It is 19 feet high and 12 feet in diameter. There was one test at the Stennis Space Center in Mississippi where all five engines were tested at once on a test booster section. That is the most thrust ever tested at once. We were told that the sound was unbelievable. I would love to witness that type of test.
Alas, the Apollo program is long gone. Those were heady days. I will never forget watching the moon landing.
