One of a pair of 3000 years old sphinx in front of Imperial Academy of Arts on Universitetskaya Embankment on the north shore of the Neva River. They were acquired in the early 19th century when it was a civic pride for major European cities to display Egyptian artifacts.
Across the river on the right is Glavnoye admiralteystvo (Admiralty Building).
