Back from the Underworld

"Although Giulio thought that he could flee into a reckless relationship
with a much younger woman, he was discovering that his flight might be
more emotionally perilous than he had thought. Fabienne had planted deep
self-doubts into his psyche, small seeds of guilt that would grow and haunt
him especially when he found himself alone. He felt he was a lonely figure
wandering in an old deserted garden with no exit."

"During his years with Gabrielle, he had never seen himself as predatory.
In her devotion to him, Gabrielle had acted as if their relationship was
one of her having no expectations. She had never asked him for exclusivity,
nor had she ever promised it for herself. Yet what was never asked for nor
expected was in fact what both had become accustomed to. Despite their living
a continent apart, Gabie seemed content to fan the flames of their passion
into a consuming blaze with no plan for the future or no ulterior motive."
