August 27, 2017

We had quite a night. Although Hurricane Harvey didn't hit us, the rain bands certainly did. About 11:00 pm last night it started to rain very hard. We watched the radar and saw that one of the rain bands was training right over us. I have never seen such rain. About 1:00 am the power went out. We got our flashlights and then headed to bed. The rain was so hard that it made a thunderous drumming on the house. Somehow we managed to get to sleep. During the night Ginny made an inspection tour of the house looking for leaks. We had a couple of damp spots on the floor that looked like water was seeping in through the cement slab. The real good news was that the leak that was supposed to be patched as part of the house renovation seemed to work. We had something to eat and I was prepared for the long wait for electrical power to be returned. In the past it was about three days. We hit the sack to nap for a while because it had been a long night. Then as if by magic the power was restored in late morning and we were back to normal.

Ginny's cousin Mike who lives on the north side of town mentioned that he found a web site that is the Harris County Flood Control District’s Flood Warning System. They maintain rain gauges and water level gauges throughout the county. One of those doodads is about 200 yards from the house on the bridge over Horsepen Bayou. Today's picture is the rain gauge for the 24 hour period before 2pm today. During the height of the storm the rain rate was 4.52 inches per hour and a total of 18.64 inches for the 24 hour period. That is an unbelievable amount of rain. You cannot imagine what that amount of rainfall is like until you experience it. Once was enough.
