Belle, a grayish-brown eastern screech owl, arrived at the American Eagle Foundation on November 23, 2016. She had been found in Maryville, TN, on September 20, 2016, after possibly colliding with a vehicle. Belle is an adult owl, but they have no idea how old she is.
I have to tell a funny story about the variety of English they speak down there, which I have a hard time understanding. The AEF guide had earlier said, “We don’t release our birds into the wild until we’re sure they can keel.” I didn’t get it, nor did another woman, who asked what this keeling was. The guide said, “You know, keel, until they can keel another animal.” Oh, kill! Then when she introduced Belle, it was “Bayel.” A woman from Maryland said to me, “I think she means Belle.” It really is another world!
