This morning we headed out from Columbia, South Carolina to Raleigh, North Carolina. The intention was to visit another state capitol. This would be number 44. Whenever we get to a capitol we go right over to check things out. One thing that is important is lighting. We never really know what the situation will be. It turns out that the North Carolina capitol is small and it doesn't have a distinctive dome. Additionally, there are lots of trees which block the view of the building. The sky had a thin overcast so we decided to have a go at our usual picture of us with the building taking advantage of the diffuse light. That worked well. We had a quick walk through the building to see what it was like. Saturday morning we have a tour arranged so we will return.
After getting checked into the hotel we were met by our old neighbor Gene Brown. He took us on a guided tour of Durham and the Duke University campus. The most impressive thing we saw was the Duke chapel. Very beautiful architecture. On the way back to the hotel we drove through the North Carolina State campus. In the evening we had dinner with Gene and his wife Pat at their house. A very enjoyable day.
