Sometimes Things Happen Too Fast

Kalamazoo, Michigan

I got a few shots of this hawk perched, and then it took flight.
All I needed was anticipation, better tracking, another 100mm, a higher shutter speed...

I've been shooting birds for a long time now. I give you everything I know.
If you want to shoot a portrait of a bird, you don't have enough lens.
If you want to shoot a bird in flight, you have have to much lens.
Happens all the time.

What I am starting to do.
For years, I was able to do ok with a 6-10 megapixel camera.
I've moved up to a few 20 mp cameras.
With the cropping ability that you get with the larger sensor, back that zoom out a bit
and get some of the environment with it.
That way is the bird extends it's wings, you keep them in frame.

That's my tip of the day.

Some challenges "click" ideas for me, while with others I can find myself forcing things. If I helped you think of something, please go ahead and post it.

Guilty as charged of "belt and suspendering" the perched hawk shot by posting it both places.

Dave,
I agree that the shot in pending (and in the thread) is quite nice, but this is perfect for the challenge. I just wish I had thought about it myself.

I'm not complaining about the perched shot, posted in Pending. http://www.pbase.com/cichallenge/image/165582594

I love it. I have caught quite a few this way - and I always say about the same thing - whoops, I was zoomed in too much,
