Great spangled fritillary butterfly larva (Speyeria cybele)

Reveler Conservation Area

I was quite excited to stumble across this medium size caterpillar, the larva of the beautiful big Great Spangled Fritillary butterfly. The larval host plant is violets of which there were many nearby. To see the buttefly this spiky creature turns into http://www.pbase.com/laroseforest/image/160538876 and http://www.pbase.com/laroseforest/image/162373258 The butterflies are common at the conservation are and one year I counted 60 in a few hours.

Cette chenille toute noire est étonnante avec ses piquants.

Belle trouvaille.

Excellent find and capture. Those spikes sure help to protect from predators. ~V

It already shows it's colours but not the beauty that it will become.

Interesting looking creature, captured in excellent detail. I found a caterpillar in some corn last night, but nowhere as fascinating as this one ;-). V.

beautiful sharp shot, not even close to the butterfly!

It's always amazing what the larva becomes - such a beautiful delicate butterfly. Another great find and photo for you.

Great find. I would be there every day watching for the metamorphic changes! I'm still watching my Eastern Black Swallowtail chrysalis which should be opening this weekend or a couple of days after that - just have to find proper flowers on which it can feed - not many things in bloom around here that they like - I'm used to seeing these butterflies later - in the summer.

chunky and almost charbroiled looking, and in no way hinting at the beautiful butterfly it will become....superior shot..
