The touristy parts of this city are charming and lull you into a sense of idyllic perfection that is "Nor Cal" and the city by the bay. It's hip, trendy and edgy with a deep vein running into it with billions of tech dollars fueling everything one could want. Turn off any main street, look further than Starbucks or fancy remodeled homes and you'll see homeless, crazy people, strung out addicts walking like zombies, sleeping people only steps away from comfort, food and care. The drug culture here is unreal to me. Seems around every corner I see discarded methadone patches littering the sidewalk, used needles and the constant smell of weed. It's a stark contrast to the white linen table clothes at the W Hotel or fancy eateries along the financial district that I played in this week. I guess urban camping, which is my name for homelessness is a pastime here thats encouraged rather than attempting to solve the problems? I am not troubled by what I see but rather confused that such a progressive "town" which purports itself as open and fostering unity has so much despair openly displayed. There are may sights to see here- Seeing the dead homeless person being zipped into a body bag isn't photo a day worthy but yeah, saw that too on my morning walk...
